There is no more densely packed automotive class than crossover SUVs. Flightline Mazda customers have a lot of crossover SUV options to choose from, but the most popular choice is arguably the Mazda CX-5. Because the segment is so filled with excellent options, potential customers will really benefit from some direct comparisons between the 2021 Mazda CX-5 vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4. The current Mazda CX-5 can be outfitted with an upgraded power plant that will make more performance than the RAV4, but the overall Mazda CX-5 package is slimmer and more maneuverable than the Toyota crossover SUV. Additionally, our manufacturing partner has introduced a new trim, the Carbon Edition.

All 2021 Mazda CX-5 use the same basic engine architecture, the SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. It will make 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Upper trim grades will add a turbocharger to the engine to boost output up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque when the gas tank is filled with 93-octane gasoline. Even with the turbocharged engine using regular gas, it will still make 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Toyota only uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine making 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
Every 2021 Mazda CX-5 will be able to tow up to 2,000 pounds, while most 2021 RAV4 trims will top out at 1,500 pounds. Some of the highest RAV4 models will be able to pull a little more.
Both the 2021 Mazda CX-5 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 have two rows of seats that can hold five people. Also, both vehicles have very similar dimensions for passenger legroom. When people are sitting in the back of the Mazda crossover SUV, there will be 30.9 cubic-feet of space. Folding the rear seat down will make up to 59.6 cubic-feet available. The larger and heavier 2021 Toyota RAV4 will have slightly more cargo space to offer.
Mazda and Toyota have each made smartphone-compatible infotainment systems that will have access to both the Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ suites of applications. Mazda Connected Services will offer additional capabilities.
